Cohort Supervision Sequence
Week 1: Assessment
Facilitator: Sidai Dong
As a part of the program’s practitioner model, interns are encouraged to utilize assessments for diagnostic clarification and to enhance the therapeutic process. CAPS does not provide full assessment batteries, however, there are chances to engage in therapeutic assessment. Therapeutic assessment is integrated with case conceptualizations at CAPS. Interns are given the opportunity to implement psychological assessments, scoring, interpretation and empirically based recommendation to enhance therapeutic rapport building and treatment outcomes. During the internship year, interns complete a brief 3-5 page assessment write up that is utilized to guide formal case presentations.
Learning Objectives:
- To incorporate multi-culturally informed theory into assessment
- To enhance diagnostic clarification skills through assessment
- To provide training in enhancing the therapeutic relationship and therapy outcomes by using therapeutic assessment
- To enhance case conceptualization skills by incorporating assessment
Week 2: Diversity
Facilitator: Maame Esi Coleman
In the Social Justice/DEI Group Supervision Sequence, interns will engage in self-reflection and exploration of biases and microaggressions that emerge when working with clients, both from therapist to client and from client to therapist. We will consider the role of transference and countertransference and of systems of privilege, power, and oppression in these dynamics. Interns will consider what social justice can look like when working with students both within in the counseling setting as well as through campus engagement efforts, and they will begin to develop a social justice framework and toolbox for working with students from minoritized communities in these different settings. Our own intersectionality, struggles related to cultural humility and competence, and normal anxieties and fears related to vulnerability, authenticity, and/or imposter phenomenon will be central to the work. Journaling and case studies will be utilized.
Week 3: Research
Facilitator: Luis Ponte
The research cohort supervision sequence focuses on creating a process-oriented space where interns come together to discuss relevant research as it relates to university counseling centers. Throughout the intern year, this sequence will encourage interns to think critically about scientific literature as it applies to a variety of domains of UCC work including but not limited to: evidence-based practice, diversity and inclusion, supervision, assessment measures, and unique factors impacting UCCs. Interns will be encouraged to not only thoughtfully engage with the material as practitioner/scientists, but to grapple with how the material applies to the types of clinicians they strive to be and the systems we function within as providers in a university counseling center.
Learning Objectives:
- Thoughtfully integrate scientific research in clinical practice
- Fluently dialogue about the ways scientific research applies to the diverse roles held by a psychologist at a UCC
- Explore ways that individual and cultural diversity are reflected in scholarly works and in the implementation of their findings
Week 4: AOD
Facilitators: Nathan Ellison & Michelle Morris
In the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) supervision sequence, interns will learn and dialogue about current AOD trends related to the college population and geographical location of the University. Interns will learn about AOD work within CAPS and other referral options in our community. The hope is that interns will expand on their knowledge of these concerns and increase in confidence in working with students who are struggling with AOD concerns.
Learning Objectives
- Engage in dialogue about current AOD trends in college population
- Learn about internal referral process and what clients can expect from a brief therapy model
- Increase competence in administration and interpretation of AOD assessments, assess readiness for change and engage in realistic goal setting with clients
- Learn about community/campus resources
