Self-compassion is the practice of showing oneself kindness, recognizing that we are not alone in our struggles, and engaging in mindfulness.

Dr. Neff's concept incorporates ideas of learning how to show ourselves more kindness and treat ourselves as we would a good friend. This can be difficult and challenging, but many people discover that being hard on themselves doesn't work. It takes practice to learn how to be nicer to oneself.
Self-compassion also teaches about common humanity - that everyone suffers with something in their lives. The idea is not to compare suffering but to realize that it's ok to struggle as a human being.
Mindfulness is also an important part of self-compassion - learning to examine our feelings in a non-judgmental way so we can better know how to respond and cope.
