Approach to Therapy and Professional Interests
My approach to therapy is a blend of humanistic and client-centered perspectives: I want to know you for who you are, where you’ve come from, and where you’re hoping to go. I believe in emphasizing a client’s strengths, values, and sense of purpose in guiding our work. If these are areas you don’t yet feel confident in, that’s okay too! Sometimes the best first step is taking time to explore these areas. Whether we’re working to manage academic stress, figure out who you are, cope with a loss, navigate relationships, or find a way out of a rut, I always want my clients to feel seen, heard, and valued. Therapy is a dynamic process and I want you to have a voice in how we pursue your goals.
The way my therapy sessions look varies by the client and the circumstances. Often, my sessions include elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on being mindful in the present moment and helping you feel empowered in the difficult moments of your daily life. I also typically pull from traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) through an exploration of the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, with a particular emphasis on recognizing and validating your emotions. We may utilize take-home activities, experiment with coping skills, practice skills during the session, roleplay a difficult conversation, or take time to sit with a difficult feeling. Through all the avenues we take together in therapy, I want your needs, your comfort, and your goals to be at the center of our focus.
Some of my professional interests include: Identity Development, LGBTQ+ Issues, Self Esteem and Self Worth Issues, Family of Origin Concerns, Relationship Concerns, and Anxiety Issues
Personal Statement on Diversity and Social Justice
I place a great deal of value on diversity, inclusion, and social justice. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I understand firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate a stigmatized identity. I take an identity-affirming approach in all my work, especially in the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals but also in identities across race, nationality, ability status, religion, socioeconomic status, and more. My goal is to listen, understand, affirm, and respect all facets of a client’s background, identity, and values. My priority is to see you and support you for your whole self. I also strive to empower my clients to have an active role in our relationship, and so I am always ready to learn how I can be a better advocate for my clients.
Personal Interests
In my free time, I enjoy traveling, playing board games and video games, and going to the movies. I have been known to walk into a movie theater just to buy popcorn. My favorite travel destinations are Italy (where I studied abroad for a semester) and Japan (where I went for my honeymoon), but I’m also a big fan of amusement parks, aquariums, and snowy mountains. After work, I love to try new restaurants and you’ll most likely find me at a taqueria. At home, I have two goofy Labradors who demand all my attention.
